Male & Female Dinosaur Variants

How gendered variants (~80) change herd planning, display islands, and early stocking decisions.

Male & Female Variants Guide

Official Dinosaur news states you can raise 40 dinosaur species with male and female versions of each—about eighty variants total—across herbivores, carnivores, aquatic dinosaurs, and pterosaurs. The Steam store blurb sometimes says “more than 50” species; until launch day (August 13, 2026), this wiki treats 40 / ~80 as the concrete planning number and “50+” as marketing ceiling language.

This page explains how to use gendered variants without turning your first island into a checklist museum. Pair it with the Species Hub, Needs Tier List, and Ecosystem & Symbiosis.

Why variants matter

Variants are not only cosmetic. In management sims, gendered pairs influence how players think about:

  • Display storytelling — mixed herds look alive in Creative showcases
  • Population counting — eighty slots tempt overstocking
  • Aggression and space — two adults of a large carnivore species cost more territory than one
  • Co-op roles — one player may babysit a breeding-looking group while another sculpts terrain

Until the shipping UI labels every behavior, assume variants share diet families with their species while still consuming unique space and attention. Stock pairs only when the habitat already supports the species.

Stocking order that respects variants

  1. Unlock comfort with one sex of a forgiving herbivore on a compact map (Maps Overview).
  2. Add the matching partner only after food and water stay green across cycles.
  3. Repeat for a second herbivore species before any apex carnivore pair.
  4. Treat aquatic and pterosaur pairs as late unlocks—see Aquatic & Pterosaurs.

Herbivore pairs

Herbivore pairs are the safest Creative lesson. They teach density without instant wipe risk. Keep forage continuous; do not place “one of everything” just to fill the roster. Guide: Herbivores.

Carnivore pairs

Two adults of a large predator can erase a starter herd that one animal would only thin. Place dens with escape arcs and delay second carnivore species until prey recovers. Guide: Carnivores.

Aquatic and flyer pairs

Water and air species punish incomplete routes. A male/female aquatic pair still needs the same river or lagoon volume; flyers still need roosts that do not steal the only drinking shore. Build infrastructure first.

Classic versus Creative mindset

Creative can host showcase pairs earlier because failure is cheap. Classic should treat each new pair as a budget line against food and territory. FPS Survival players should almost never begin with dual apex adults—read FPS Survival and How to Play.

Co-op and variants

In local split-screen, agree who monitors pair needs while the other edits. Remote Play Together hosts should keep variant counts modest to protect streaming performance (Performance Tips, Local Co-op).

Common mistakes

  • Filling all ~80 variants on day one
  • Ignoring store-versus-news species count differences
  • Pairing apex carnivores before forage recovery
  • Using ridge maps for first mixed-pair experiments

Plan islands around habitats, not completionist grids. Variants reward patience.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Dinosaur on Steam.

How many male and female dinosaur variants are in Dinosaur?

Developer news describes about 40 species with male and female versions each, roughly 80 variants. Store text may say 50+ species—use 40/~80 for planning until launch confirms final counts.

Should I place male and female pairs immediately?

Only after a single adult of that species stays healthy. Pairs multiply space and food pressure.

Do variants change diet needs?

Expect variants to stay inside their species diet family. Space, aggression, and water access still scale with how many adults you place.

Are variants unlocked with codes?

No. Dinosaur does not use redeem codes for species or variants.
